The “Barbie” movie is right around the corner, opening July 21. It’s been a long time coming, and anticipation for the movie is getting feverish with it being so close. To both further promote the movie and capitalize on its excitement, Bloomingdale’s and Warner Bros. have partnered to launch a line of clothing, accessories and toys inspired by the movie. It’s currently only available online, but you can also find some of the items in select stores beginning July 13.

Do you want to dress like Barbie? You’re in luck.

It doesn’t matter what your personal sense of style is. In the 64 years since her launch on March 9, 1959, Barbie, her friends and fellow dolls have donned about every style you can imagine. Even if she hasn’t worn your favorite style, custom-made Barbie clothes mean she can be made to represent you.

That said, the Bloomingdale’s collection is inspired specifically by the clothes and spirit of Margot Robbie’s version of Barbie in the upcoming film. Bloomingdale’s in-house brand, Aqua, makes most of the clothes and accessories. 

Clothes-wise, you can find various kinds of dresses, jackets, T-shirts, skirts, shorts and pants. Most are in shades of pink, red, white and blue. Accessory-wise, you can find earrings, necklaces and various kinds of bags. Most of them use heart or star imagery and gold-plated metals. You can also find footwear, such as tennis shoes, sandals and inline skates.

If none of the pieces immediately leap out to you as your style, think about how you can make it your style. For example, grab the “Barbie” T-shirt and wear it with shredded jeans for a ’90s grunge look. Or, follow the “underwear as outerwear” trend by wearing the cropped blazer over lingerie. Everyone is allowed to have their own ideal version of Barbie, including you. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

A special event

A one-day-only special event is happening on July 22 at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street store in New York City. The goal is to make you feel like you’re in Barbie’s world. To achieve that, Bloomingdale’s said there will be “Barbie-Land-themed window displays, hair salon pampering and fun, fun, fun experiences.”

What’s the ‘Barbie’ movie about?

The exact plot of “Barbie” is still unknown, but there are a few known pieces. The general idea is that Margot Robbie’s version of Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s version of Ken somehow leave the fictional world of Barbie Land and make it to our real world. What they do there is still a mystery, but it does involve them interacting with Mattel’s CEO, played by Will Ferrell.

What to watch while you wait for ‘Barbie’

If you’re too excited about the “Barbie” movie and need something to tide you over, check out some films made by “Barbie’s” writers Greta Gerwig, who also directs the film, and Noah Baumbach. Doing so can also give you a good idea of the style and tone the film will likely have. “Lady Bird” is a great example. Or, you could get your Margot Robbie or Ryan Gosling fix by watching any of the countless movies they’ve starred in. “I, Tonya” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love” are good examples.

Dogs with high prey drive destroy every toy you give them

Have you ever tried to get your dog to stop ripping apart toys or chewing them to bits? Even with adequate training, it's still a hard habit to break, and that's because some dogs have a higher prey drive than others. Prey drive refers to the inherent inclination to hunt and capture prey. Believe it or not, dogs with higher prey drive look at toys — especially those with squeakers! — as prey. It's in their nature to, well, kill the prey.

By ripping plush toys to shreds and destroying the squeaker, your dog is simulating what they would do in the wild. So, yes, your dog thinks they're "killing" the toy.

Certain breeds are more prone to these behaviors. Terriers, hounds, some snow dogs and chihuahuas usually have a strong prey drive.

Why dogs chew on their toys

Chewing motivated by prey drive is only one reason dogs chew aggressively. You might also notice your dog chewing excessively on bones or other toys rather than ripping them to shreds.

This kind of chewing is most common in puppies learning about the world, still working on their training and simultaneously teething. Puppies will chew excessively to soothe their symptoms of teething, but dogs of all ages also chew toys as a cleaning behavior. Another instinct that dogs naturally have, they chew to keep their jaws strong and clean their teeth.

The only problem is that chewing on certain things, like plastic toys, for example, can potentially cause harm if bits and pieces splinter off and your dog swallows them. Once ingested, these pieces may cause intestinal blockages.

How to discourage destructive chewing in dogs

Suppose you find your dog's chewing habits to be too destructive, meaning they're chewing on furniture, shoes or other items or are intentionally destroying every toy you give them. In that case, there are a few tricks to discouraging or rerouting aggressive chewing.

• Try a frozen towel. Take a wet towel, ring it out and place it in the freezer for a few hours. This soothes your teething puppy's gums and teaches them what's on or off limits to chew.
• Use a dog repellent. There are certain scents that dogs don't find appealing, so if you spray a dog repellent — like Granick's Bitter Apple — on the items that shouldn't be chewed, it will train your dog to avoid them.
• Keep your dog mentally stimulated. The general rule of thumb for staving off boredom in dogs is to walk them twice a day. Another way to do this is to stimulate their mind with the best dog puzzles.
• Invest in more durable toys. All the toys listed below are made with more durable materials, like natural rubber, that will last longer. Some of them are still furry or plush on the inside but are reinforced inside with a stronger rubber layer.

What is a migraine?

A migraine is not a secondary headache that results from some other medical condition. It is a debilitating neurological disease. According to the Cleveland Clinic, migraines are hereditary. Roughly 80% of people who suffer from migraines “have a first-degree relative with the disease.”

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

There are four stages to a migraine: prodrome, aura, attack and post-drome. Not everyone goes through all four stages or experiences them in the same way. If you have a lawn, you need to aerate it so it can grow lush and strong. Aerating helps break up compacted soil, allowing air, water and essential nutrients to reach the roots. This, in turn, helps grass grow and prevents brown patches from forming in the yard. If you’ve never aerated your lawn before, there are a few ways you can do this successfully.

How to aerate your lawn

Dethatch your yard

Thatch is the layer of plant leaves, roots, stems and other debris on top of healthy grass. When it builds up, it can compact the soil, preventing nutrients and air from reaching the root system. Before you can aerate the lawn, you need to remove the thatch. One way to do this is with a thatch rake, which catches the debris and pulls it away from the rest of the yard. You can use a durable garden rake if you don’t have a thatch rake, but it might not be as effective for tough buildup.

Verify soil type

The type of soil you have will dictate how often you need to aerate it. It will also determine how difficult it is to do it. For example, soft soil consisting mostly of sand doesn’t need to be aerated very often since it doesn't compact as easily. On the other hand, clay-based soil packs down easily and needs more frequent aeration. The more compact the soil is, the more powerful tool you'll need to aerate the lawn.

If you’re not sure what type of soil you have, you can use a soil identifier.

Water the lawn

After dethatching, make sure to water your entire lawn. You can use a handheld garden hose with a nozzle sprayer to water the yard, or you can use a sprinkler system and leave it running for 15 to 30 minutes.

Mark important areas

Before aerating, mark any areas you want to avoid with small marking flags. This could be anything from outcroppings of small rocks to other plants. Doing this ensures you don’t damage the aerator or anything else during the process.

Select the right aerator

There are three types of aerators.

• Core aerator: These have thin hollow tines that create soil plugs and pull them from the yard. This leaves small holes in the yard, allowing for water, nutrients and oxygen to reach the roots. Most core aerators reach 2 to 4 inches deep. The downside with these machines is that they leave the plugs on the surface of the lawn, so you need to pick them up.
• Slicing aerator: These machines use blades to slice through several layers of thatch, all the way down to the soil. They can easily penetrate a couple of inches and work well for most soil types.
• Spike aerator: Spike aerators push the soil down into the ground to create pockets for shallow roots to breathe. The downside of this method is the soil ultimately ends up compressed. However, these machines work well for first-time aeration and for clay-based soil.

Choose equipment that works with your lawn and soil. It should be able to reach between 2 to 3 inches deep.

How to use the aerator

Start by aerating the entire lawn in one direction. Then, go back over the area in a perpendicular pattern. This method ensures full coverage of your lawn.

Tips on aerating the lawn

• Pick up any remaining plugs. Or, if you live in a moist environment, leave them to break up on their own.
• Encourage growth in areas that need it. If there are dead spots in your yard, sprinkle grass seeds and fertilizer to encourage grass to grow.
• Use a soil testing kit. A soil testing kit indicates the pH level and chemical makeup of your soil, which can tell you which fertilizer to use after aeration.

When to aerate your lawn

If you have a regular lawn maintenance plan, you can aerate once every one to three years. For cool-season grasses, aerate the lawn at the beginning of spring or fall. For warm-season grasses, do it in late spring or at the beginning of summer.

Also, if you see thatch buildup or water puddles starting to form, it could be time to aerate the lawn. When in doubt, take a pointed tool such as a screwdriver and try to poke it through the soil. If it doesn’t penetrate very deeply, or if it requires a lot of force, it might be time to start the process.

No matter how cute your dog is or how good they are at playing fetch, they don't feel much like your best friend when they damage your lawn. Of course, it isn't your dog's fault that their pee kills grass but naturally, you'll want to fix dog damage. 

You could just sprinkle grass seed over the affected area and cross your fingers, but you'll have more luck taking your time and doing it right — for instance, by raking up dead grass and using a lawn aerator.

How do you repair a dog-damaged lawn? 

Rake up dead grass

The first step in repairing lawn damage is raking up as much dead grass from the damaged areas as possible. If the thought of this fills you with dread, we get it — nobody likes to do extra yard work, but this creates a blank canvas from which new grass seed can grow. A dethatching rake is a good choice for removing dead grass, but any yard rake will do the job. 

Saturate with water

It's primarily the nitrogen in dogs' urine that turns grass brown and some of this is likely hanging around in areas of dead grass. Give these patches a good soaking to flush nitrogen out of the area that might hamper new growth. 

Aerate the area

It's a good idea to aerate the dead patches of your lawn. Aerating stimulates root growth, which is just what you need after grass has been damaged. It also lets more air, water and nutrients reach deeper into the soil, which helps promote healthy growth. Since you'll only be aerating a small area, a manual lawn aerator is your best bet. 

Add topsoil

It's almost time to reseed your lawn, but first, add a layer of topsoil or compost (around an inch or two) to the affected areas. This gives your seeds a good base to grow from. Use a rake to mix it in with the soil beneath. 

Reseed the patches

Now sprinkle grass seed over the affected area and rake it to get an even distribution. If you know what type of grass your lawn consists of, use the same type of grass seed. If you're unsure, try using a general patch repair seed mix. Water the area daily for a week or two and don't mow the area until the grass is around 3 inches tall. 

How to prevent dog damage to a lawn

Once you've repaired your dog-damaged lawn, you might want to learn how to keep your lawn from getting damaged by dog pee. 

• Dilute urine. It might seem strange to follow your dog around with a hose or watering can every time they go outside to pee. However, watering the area where your dog has done their business dilutes the urine and reduces the chance of damage. 
• Keep your dog well-hydrated. Dehydrated dogs have more concentrated urine that's more likely to damage your grass. Keep your dog well hydrated and you may see improvements. 
• Add lawn-protecting minerals to your dog's water. While there are supplements you can feed your dog to keep their urine from damaging the lawn, these change the pH of their urine and can increase the risk of kidney stones. However, you can buy minerals that neutralize the nitrogen and ammonia from your dog's drinking water to reduce lawn damage without changing urine pH.

Slow and steady wins the race

A camera stabilizer shouldn’t be confused with image stabilization, which is a software process in cameras and video recording devices. The software compensates for small pan and tilt motions, stabilizing the image to reduce blurring.

However, a digital camera stabilizer essentially does the same thing but on the physical camera. It is usually a metal rig, handle or pole designed to minimize hand movements or shaking while holding it. The part where the camera attaches to the stabilizer arm is called the mounting head, and a three-axis gimbal on top of that is the primary component that keeps everything level.

While they all perform the same function, there are different kinds of camera stabilizers. It’s a great idea to see which gadget works the best for you according to the material being shot. For example, if you are filing action sports such as skateboarding where you need to get low to the ground, a handheld U-shaped stabilizer is best.
