New Cleveland Browns logo: Spot the 8 hidden symbols https://fox8.com/sports/new-cleveland-browns-logo-spot-the-8-hidden-symbols/ Fri, 16 Jun 2023 17:05:57 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2171564 [In the player above, watch FOX 8 News coverage of FirstEnergy Stadium signage coming down.]

CLEVELAND (WJW) -- After weeks of fan voting, the Cleveland Browns' new dog logo has been chosen.

Fans in April started submitting their own logo designs and ideas for consideration on social media and on the Browns website.

Fans then voted on their favorites, narrowing down a total of nearly 300 entries to their top 10 favorites. Voting for the winner closed earlier this month.

Below is the winning design, which will be "prominently displayed" in future merchandise, reads a Monday news release from the team.

(Cleveland Browns)

The logo was created by Houston Mark, a designer who "sought to create a logo that displayed the intensity and passion of the fanbase while including several symbols that highlight the history of both the franchise and Cleveland," reads the news release.

It's based on a bullmastiff, the dog breed chosen in a pre-contest poll as best representing the team.

"We are so excited to unveil a new dawg logo that perfectly encapsulates who we are as a franchise and as a city," said Executive Vice President and Partner JW Johnson. "Our fans have been asking us for a new dawg logo for quite some time, so it made perfect sense for them to select the logo themselves and decide how they want our team to be represented — and they made a great choice."

There are several details hidden in the design:

(Cleveland Browns)
  • Ohio can be seen in the top-left corner on the dog's ear.
  • The dog's nose is in the shape of a football.
  • The dog's tag is in the shape of Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The 'C' shape is an homage to the city and the area where the Dawg Pound originated, the east endzone, is highlighted.
  • In the middle of the tag is a guitar pick, a nod to Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
  • The eight spikes on the collar signify the Browns' eight championship finishes.
  • The Hope Memorial Bridge, featuring the Cleveland Guardians of Traffic, is outlined on the dog's jowls.
  • The shape of the maskless Pound Helmet worn by Dawg Pound fans can be seen in the top-right.
  • The helmet stripe seen on the classic Browns helmet is also on the center of the dog's forehead.

"The thing I really wanted to focus on was the fans and the relationship they have with the team," Mark said. "How can I make the Cleveland Browns fanbase the forefront of the design while also maintaining this aggressive, no-nonsense attitude?"

The new dawg logo will now be used as another logo for the franchise, alongside the helmet logo and Brownie the Elf.

"There were so many good logos that got submitted and made it far, so this a dream come true, and I can't stress that enough," said Mark. "To see my logo in an NFL stadium, on people's shirts and people relate this logo to the Browns is the most incredible feeling."

Former Browns wide receiver, inventor of 'spike,' dies https://fox8.com/news/former-browns-wide-receiver-inventor-of-spike-dies/ Thu, 15 Jun 2023 19:14:42 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2176954 PITTSBURG, Texas (WKBN) - KLTV is reporting that former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Homer Jones has died at the age of 82 following a battle with cancer.

Jones was the first player to celebrate scoring a touchdown by spiking the ball on the ground. He did so after following an 89-yard touchdown in 1965. It was his first career score.

He played just one season in Cleveland in 1970, after playing for the New York Giants from 1964-69.

For his career, Jones caught 224 passes for 4,986 yards and 36 touchdowns in 87 games.

In his lone season with the Browns, the two-time Pro Bowler returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the debut of "Monday Night Football."

Perrion Winfrey's assault charge dropped https://fox8.com/news/perrion-winfreys-assault-charge-dropped/ Mon, 12 Jun 2023 17:49:47 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2171306 *Watch previous FOX 8 I-Team coverage above of an armed robbery in downtown Cleveland in which Perrion Winfrey was a victim.

HOUSTON (WJW) -- A misdemeanor assault charge leveled against Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey has been dismissed, according to court records.

Winfrey was arrested April 12 in Texas, accused of causing "bodily injury" to a woman he was dating, the Associated Press reported that month.

Court records from the Harris County, Texas, clerk show Winfrey on Friday, June 9, completed a diversion program for the misdemeanor charge of assault on a family member. The charge was dismissed that day.

He had been free on a $1,000 personal bond.

Winfrey was a fourth-round draft pick in 2022. Browns General Manager Andrew Berry in April said the team was monitoring Winfrey's legal situation, and wouldn't say whether he could be released.

"We’ll deal with that matter internally and make the appropriate decision for the organization,” he said, according to AP.

Winfrey had some maturity issues last season, AP reported. The Browns sent him home before a practice and suspended him for their Week 2 game against the New York Jets. It followed a pattern of behavior by Winfrey and prompted star defensive end Myles Garrett to say his teammate needed to “learn how to be a pro.”

A few days later, Winfrey acknowledged he had growing up to do. Later in the season, he missed time after sustaining a concussion when he crashed a scooter.

Winfrey finished the season with 22 tackles and one-half sack in 13 games.

FirstEnergy signage coming down from Browns stadium https://fox8.com/news/firstenergy-signage-coming-down-from-browns-stadium/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 18:21:23 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2160957 CLEVELAND (WJW) - It's officially the end of an era as the FirstEnergy signs start coming down from the Cleveland Browns stadium.

The Browns were originally in a $100 million agreement with FirstEnergy to keep the name through the Browns' 2030 season.

The stadium took the name in 2013.

However, back in April, both sides decided to end the naming rights agreement.

A push for the name change came due to FirstEnergy's key role in the state of Ohio's largest bribery scandal.

City repairs to Browns stadium not completed, 1 year later https://fox8.com/news/city-repairs-to-browns-stadium-not-completed-1-year-later/ Wed, 07 Jun 2023 22:49:24 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2164185 CLEVELAND (WJW) - The FOX 8 I-Team checked up on a big list of Cleveland city projects for Browns Stadium approved last year, and we found not one of those projects has been finished.

We're talking about your money and your stadium, so we investigated.

Drive past the stadium, you might see crews changing the signs on Browns Stadium, but we looked into what happened with $10.5 million in stadium work.

Last June, Cleveland City Council approved “emergency repairs” and “capital repairs.”

So, we filed a records request asking the city which projects have been completed. The answer came back as “no records" of any of the projects being finished even after a year.

Looking at the projects approved last year, some you would notice. Others, you might not notice.

For instance, the list includes new ramps where fans walk along with other concrete repairs. Plus, work on the heating system, lighting, gutters and much more.

The I-Team findings caught the attention of Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin. The council approved the projects last June with money set aside for stadium work.

"Whenever we get tips like this, we like to look into it," the council president said. "We always expect a sense of urgency whenever we pass legislation. We don't want costs to go up. We don't want other challenges to creep up."

The mayor’s office did not make anyone available to explain why we found no projects finished after a year. In fact, we had sent questions to the mayor’s office for a week without getting clarification.

A note on the response to our records request says, simply, “The 2022 projects are underway but have not yet been completed."

Again, the city has not explained what exactly that means.

Meanwhile, we spoke to season ticket holder Chris Becker. We asked how important it is to him having every project at the stadium done.

"Well, it’s really important as an old guy season ticket holder," he said.

Becker remembers, decades ago, the Browns left town after playing in an old, run-down stadium.

"It’s really important for us as fans to make sure that the stadium is well-maintained. I mean, it is getting to be 25 years old, and even your house gets old after 25 years," he said.

We’ve reported the Browns are studying possible significant stadium renovations. Yet, city repairs approved a year ago have not been completed.

I-Team: Browns players had cars stolen https://fox8.com/news/i-team/i-team-browns-players-were-victims-of-carjackings/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 13:25:27 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2161563 CLEVELAND (WJW) - The FOX 8 I-Team has uncovered the stories behind a Cleveland Browns player getting held up at gunpoint, two other players having cars stolen and a fan seeing a player’s helmet thrown from an SUV.

All of the incident happened downtown within the last three days.

This comes after the I-Team has revealed a spike in crime downtown, and we’ve obtained new video of yet another violent hold-up.

On June 4 and 5, Cleveland Browns players were victims of crime.

In the early morning hours on June 4, thieves went to a parking garage just off Public Square and stole an SUV belonging to running back Demetric Felton Jr.

A short time later, a fan saw someone throw Felton’s helmet out of a dark colored SUV near the Browns stadium.

“Little confused,” said Richard Reisner, who found the helmet. “Little excited to kind of see a Browns helmet. I went and grabbed it. I called the Browns.”

He also called police and brought the helmet to detectives. The helmet was returned to the Browns.

Police have not yet found Felton’s vehicle.

About 24 hours later, Defensive Lineman Perrion Winfrey told police six men wearing masks jumped out of a car, then robbed him and another man at gunpoint.

The suspects then stole a truck belonging to Defensive Back Greg Newsome II. The robbery happened near Filter Bar and Lounge on West Superior early Sunday morning.

Newsome told detectives he was still inside the bar when the robbery took place. Newsome said no one was injured.

Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski said Tuesday he is grateful none of the players were hurt.

“I am glad our guys are OK,“ Stefanski said. “I  want all our guys, all of our community to be safe. Cleveland police have been outstanding, Chief Drummond and I spoke yesterday. We want everyone to be safe, and we want violent people off our streets.”

As of late Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made, but detectives are continuing to investigate.

The I-Team has exposed a spike in crime downtown and obtained a new video showing a recent violent hold up not related to the Browns case. This video shows armed robbers jumping out of a vehicle and surrounding people outside a hotel. The robbers also beat a man. That happened last month.

For the first third of the year downtown, we found felony assaults up 25%, sex assaults up 22%, robbery up 19% and theft cases up 23%. The number of stolen cars has also doubled.

The fan who found the helmet is hoping the crime will stop.

"Not only just Browns players, but human beings in general. You don't want to see that happen to anybody,” Reisner said.

Deshaun Watson makes pitch for Hopkins to reunite with him in Cleveland https://fox8.com/sports/deshaun-watson-makes-pitch-for-hopkins-to-reunite-with-him-in-cleveland/ Tue, 30 May 2023 19:00:58 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2152196 ***Learn about more top stories in the video above.***

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (AP) — Standing a few feet from a golf green, Deshaun Watson made a pitch for DeAndre Hopkins to join him in Cleveland.

The Browns quarterback said Tuesday that he has spoken to Hopkins, his close friend and former Houston teammate, and encouraged the three-time All-Pro wide receiver to consider a reunion. Hopkins is a free agent after the Arizona Cardinals released him last week.

“Of course we would love to have him,” Watson said at the Browns charity golf outing. “He knows that we had a lot of connections, but that’s kind of out of my range of things. So all I can do is make a call and see what happens and let AB (Browns general manager Andrew Berry) do the rest.”

The Browns appear to be a longshot to land the 30-year-old Hopkins because of a lack of salary cap space. But Cleveland wasn't expected to get Watson either until they lured him with a fully guaranteed $230 million contract.

The idea of throwing again to Hopkins — they were teammates for three seasons — has Watson thinking big. Although Hopkins did not list Cleveland as one of his preferred teams, Watson said that doesn't mean he has ruled out the Browns.

“I’ll just say this, D-Hop, DeAndre Hopkins would love to be in a place where the opportunity is there for us to win,” Watson said. “We check all those boxes and I think for us to know and make sure we check all those boxes on the national stage, we’ve got to go out there and prove it and I think D-Hop would love to be a part of that.”

The Browns upgraded their receiving group in the offseason, but adding a player of Hopkins' caliber could be a game-changer for a team coming off a 7-10 season.

Coach Kevin Stefanski would not comment on the team's interest in Hopkins, saying he was pleased with some of its offseason additions.

“I really, really like our wide receiver room,” Stefanski said. “I love the guys that are in there. Andrew and his crew are always looking at every avenue and that type of thing, so I won’t comment specifically on the player other than to say I really like our roster.”

CLEVELAND (WJW) –  What will the Cleveland Browns‘ new dog logo look like? We are getting closer to finding out!

For more than a month, fans have been asked to vote on their favorite of nearly 300 designs submitted by local artists.

Last week, the Browns unveiled the top two finalists and now voting is once again open to determine the big winner!

You can see the top two designs and vote, here.

According to the Browns, the final round of voting runs through Friday, June 9. The winning design will be unveiled around Browns’ training camp later this summer. Although specific details of how the design will be revealed have not yet been announced.

In March, fans voted to decide what breed of dog best fits the “Browns Dawg,” and the Mastiff breed was chosen. And last year, the team also asked fans to vote for the Browns’ next field design.

SkyFOX then caught a glimpse of the new field design before the team officially announced the winner. Oops!

Za'Darius Smith paired up front with Myles Garrett https://fox8.com/news/zadarius-smith-paired-up-front-with-myles-garrett/ Thu, 25 May 2023 15:30:38 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2145402 CLEVELAND (AP) — Za'Darius Smith has dropped down to touch his literal football roots.

“Hand in the dirt,” he said.

Of all the reasons Smith is excited to be with the Cleveland Browns — a fresh start, playing on a defensive line with Myles Garrett, being back in the AFC North — the chance to play defensive end again means as much as anything.

“When I first started playing football, I was in a 4-3 system and I was always taught to just go — go get the quarterback, affect them,” Smith said following practice Wednesday. "In this situation, being here now, I get the opportunity to do that, so I just can’t wait.

“Can’t wait to get going, man.”

The Browns can't wait, either. Putting the finishing touches on a massive defensive overhaul this offseason, Cleveland acquired Smith from the Minnesota Vikings earlier this month in exchange for a pair of fifth-round draft picks.

It's a minor investment in a major player.

Smith's a three-time Pro Bowler with 54 1/2 career sacks, all while playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Now 30, and heading into his final years playing in the NFL, he's motivated to win a Super Bowl.

“My main goal right now is get a ring,” said Smith, who began his pro career with Baltimore in 2015. “That’s something that I never have experienced. So that’s the No. 1 goal, is help this team win a Super Bowl. Well, first of all, win the AFC North, sorry. And then go on and play in the Super Bowl.”

Smith is coming off a strange season with the Vikings, who signed him to a three-year, $42 million free-agent contract after he spent three years in Green Bay.

Smith had 9 1/2 sacks in his first nine games in 2022, but a knee injury hampered his productivity and that ineffectiveness led to rumblings about him being a malcontent. The chiseled 6-foot-4, 275-pounder still made the Pro Bowl.

"I couldn’t rest last year because every game I was making like $200,000 just to dress out,” he said. “So you would dress out, too? Right? Exactly. So now what’s different for me, I had a chance to rest my knee, get some rehab and actually train with my trainer in Orlando.

"And I’ve been out here working and I haven’t felt nothing, so I feel perfectly fine.”

He looks it.

“The guy’s a beast. Just look at him,” said Browns safety Juan Thornhill, another of the team's new additions. "Who’s going to stop him? You got him. You got Garrett up front. You got all the other guys. They’re going to put pressure on the quarterback. So they’re definitely going to bring the heat, which allows us to make more plays.”

Smith's presence alone gives the Browns a more fearsome image, and the idea of him coming off one edge and Garrett the other, is enough to keep any offensive coordinator from getting a good night's sleep.

Garrett isn't attending Cleveland's voluntary workouts, but Smith said he and the All-Pro have already connected.

“He sent me a text message telling me that he can’t wait to get going and hopefully we could be the best duo in league,” Smith said. “And I was telling him the D-line, we got to come up with a name for the room. So he was like, ‘All right, I’m going to get some shirts, we going to make it big.’ So that chemistry already, I can tell is going to be great."

Smith is also eager to work with new Browns coordinator Jim Schwartz, whose defenses have long played with an attacking style.

“I got a chance to talk with him when I first came in and he was telling me all the things that he wanted me to do,” Smith said. “He was like, ‘Man, we just need you to get off the ball. We know that you haven’t had that in the last past eight years.' If had the opportunity, I probably would’ve had a hundred sacks by now.”

NOTES: The Browns continue to discuss plans to honor Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who died last week at the age of 87. Coach Kevin Stefanski said his interactions with the legendary running back were impactful. “Just a mountain of a man in many ways, and we lost a very big part of our family,” Stefanski said. “It’s my job to continue to educate our guys on what he’s meant to our franchise, to our league. You stand on the shoulders of giants, and that’s Jim Brown.” ... Along with Garrett, Pro Bowl RB Nick Chubb, LG Joel Bitonio, and TE David Njoku are not attending this week's practice sessions.
