CLEVELAND (WJW) – The FOX 8 I-Team has uncovered the stories behind a Cleveland Browns player getting held up at gunpoint, two other players having cars stolen and a fan seeing a player’s helmet thrown from an SUV.

All of the incident happened downtown within the last three days.

This comes after the I-Team has revealed a spike in crime downtown, and we’ve obtained new video of yet another violent hold-up.

On June 4 and 5, Cleveland Browns players were victims of crime.

In the early morning hours on June 4, thieves went to a parking garage just off Public Square and stole an SUV belonging to running back Demetric Felton Jr.

A short time later, a fan saw someone throw Felton’s helmet out of a dark colored SUV near the Browns stadium.

“Little confused,” said Richard Reisner, who found the helmet. “Little excited to kind of see a Browns helmet. I went and grabbed it. I called the Browns.”

He also called police and brought the helmet to detectives. The helmet was returned to the Browns.

Police have not yet found Felton’s vehicle.

About 24 hours later, Defensive Lineman Perrion Winfrey told police six men wearing masks jumped out of a car, then robbed him and another man at gunpoint.

The suspects then stole a truck belonging to Defensive Back Greg Newsome II. The robbery happened near Filter Bar and Lounge on West Superior early Sunday morning.

Newsome told detectives he was still inside the bar when the robbery took place. Newsome said no one was injured.

Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski said Tuesday he is grateful none of the players were hurt.

“I am glad our guys are OK,“ Stefanski said. “I  want all our guys, all of our community to be safe. Cleveland police have been outstanding, Chief Drummond and I spoke yesterday. We want everyone to be safe, and we want violent people off our streets.”

As of late Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made, but detectives are continuing to investigate.

The I-Team has exposed a spike in crime downtown and obtained a new video showing a recent violent hold up not related to the Browns case. This video shows armed robbers jumping out of a vehicle and surrounding people outside a hotel. The robbers also beat a man. That happened last month.

For the first third of the year downtown, we found felony assaults up 25%, sex assaults up 22%, robbery up 19% and theft cases up 23%. The number of stolen cars has also doubled.

The fan who found the helmet is hoping the crime will stop.

“Not only just Browns players, but human beings in general. You don’t want to see that happen to anybody,” Reisner said.
