CLEVELAND (AP) — Josh Bell homered off an “Ohio” sign beyond the left-field wall and Myles Straw hit an RBI triple, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 6-1 win on Thursday and three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics, who lost their eighth straight.

Bell's 430-foot shot in the fifth inning off JP Sears (1-5) smacked the “H” on the sign affixed to a pedestrian walkway in Progressive Field. The blast tied it and Straw put Cleveland ahead in the inning with his two-out shot to left.

The A's have baseball's worst record at 19-58.

Oakland's mark through 77 games is the worst in the majors since the Detroit Tigers went 18-59 to start 2003.

The A's were still within 2-1 in the eighth before reliever Yacksel Rios allowed four runs on two wild pitches and two bases-loaded walks.

Nick Sandlin (3-3) pitched two hitless innings in relief of Cleveland starter Logan Allen. Enyel De Los Santos worked two innings — getting a double play to end the seventh — and Eli Morgan finished the combined three-hitter.

Sears didn’t allow Cleveland a baserunner until the fourth, when José Ramírez fouled off three pitches with two strikes before grounding a two-out single into left. Ramírez, though, was thrown out trying to steal by A’s catcher Carlos Pérez.

Sears had faced the minimum through 4 1-3 innings before Bell connected for his seventh homer this season and 500th career RBI. Andrés Giménez followed with a bloop single and stole second before Straw, who hasn't homered since Aug. 26, 2021 — more than 1,000 plate appearances — tripled.

Sears allowed just four hits and struck out eight in seven innings.

Tony Kemp's speed helped the A's take a 1-0 lead in the fifth on Aledmys Diaz's sacrifice fly.

After drawing a leadoff walk, Kemp was running when Esteury Ruiz hit a grounder to short. Kemp never slowed while rounding second and beat first baseman Bell's throw to third. Diaz followed with his fly to deep center.

Allen had to work hard to make it through just four innings, throwing 89 pitches.

The left-hander got himself into trouble in the fourth, when he walked three to load the bases. But with two outs, Allen froze Oakland's Shea Langeliers with a changeup for strike three to escape danger.

EXTRA, EXTRA

The A's have already played 10 extra-inning games, matching their total in 2022.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Guardians: As expected, OF Will Brennan (left shoulder soreness) got the day off after he fell hard while making a diving catch on the warning track in the fourth inning Wednesday night. Brennan is batting .327 (34 of 104) since May 16.

UP NEXT

Athletics: Head North to Toronto, where RHP James Kaprielian (2-6, 6.38 ERA) starts the opener of a three-game series against Blue Jays RHP Chris Bassitt (7-5, 4.16).

Guardians: RHP Shane Bieber (5-4, 3.51 ), who could be traded in the upcoming weeks, starts the opener of a three-game set against Milwaukee and Brewers RHP Wade Miley (4-2, 3.28). Miley pitched a no-hitter at Progressive Field in 2021 with Cincinnati.

Naylor scores go-ahead run in 8th inning, the Guardians beat the Athletics 7-6 https://fox8.com/sports/naylor-scores-go-ahead-run-in-8th-inning-the-guardians-beat-the-athletics-7-6/ Thu, 22 Jun 2023 02:26:43 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2185865 **Related Video Above: Guardians star visits school for art lesson.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie Bo Naylor scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a throwing error, Gavin Williams pitched 5 2/3 innings in his major league debut and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Oakland Athletics 7-6 on Wednesday night.

Naylor singled for his first hit in the majors — snapping an 0-for-19 drought — and came home on Steven Kwan’s one-out double. Myles Straw was the first to score on Kwan’s hit, which turned into a two-run play when right fielder Ramón Laureano wildly flung the ball back to the infield.

Williams, the Guardians’ consensus top prospect and 2021 first-round pick, allowed four runs on four hits — all in the third — while striking out four. The right-hander maxed out at 98 mph, topping 96 mph on 18 of his 84 pitches.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Williams went 9-6 with a 2.10 ERA in 37 minor league starts between Single-A Lake County, Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. He was 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA in nine starts this year with the Clippers.

Eli Morgan (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win, and Emmanuel Clase finished for his MLB-leading 22nd save. Austin Pruitt (1-5) gave up two runs, one earned, in one inning for Oakland.

The Athletics, who have the lowest batting average and highest ERA in the majors, lost their seventh straight and have the worst record in baseball at 19-57.

Oakland took a 6-4 lead in the seventh on run-scoring singles from rookie Esteury Ruiz and Seth Brown off Trevor Stephan. Ruiz went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and stole two bases to increase his MLB-best total to 39.

Oakland opened the scoring with four runs in the third, highlighted by Ryan Noda’s 358-foot blast to right field off Williams.

The Guardians cut it to 4-3 in the bottom half when Naylor, Steven Kwan and Amed Rosario reached to open the third and came around. Rosario and Andrés Giménez each drove in runs, while a fielding error by Laureano allowed Kwan to score.

Cleveland tied it at 4 in the fifth when Naylor singled off Athletics starter Paul Blackburn, plating Ramírez, then pulled to 6-5 in the seventh on Josh Naylor's solo homer. Josh Naylor was 4 for 4.

José Ramírez had three hits, giving him 1,236 in his career and passing Larry Doby for 17th place in Cleveland history.

REALITY CHECK

The Guardians’ top three pitching prospects have made their big league debuts this season in Williams, right-hander Tanner Bibee and left-hamder Logan Allen. With 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber in the final year of his contract and likely to be traded, the rookies’ development is paramount.

“For us to remain competitive, we need to produce these pitchers because that’s the one thing we probably can’t go out and get,” manager Terry Francona said. “You see what they get on the (free agent) market, so we’ve got to stay in our lane and develop starting pitching.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Athletics: RHP Zach Jackson (right flexor strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for RHP Angel Felipe, who was claimed off waivers from San Diego. Manager Mark Kotsay said Jackson has not suffered a setback.

Guardians: OF Will Brennan (left shoulder soreness) exited in the fifth inning, shortly after landing hard on his left side while making a diving catch on a liner by Jace Peterson. Brennan was in obvious pain after slowly getting up from the grass.

Giménez's RBI single in the 10th gives the Guardians a 3-2 win https://fox8.com/sports/gimenezs-rbi-single-in-the-10th-gives-the-guardians-a-3-2-win/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 02:43:58 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2183981 **Related Video Above: Guardians star visits school for art lesson.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — Andrés Giménez's single in the 10th inning brought home José Ramírez from third base, lifting the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-2 win Tuesday night over the Oakland Athletics, who lost their sixth straight.

With the bases loaded and none out, Giménez dropped his single off Trevor May (2-4) just inside the right-field line for Cleveland's fourth walk-off win this season.

Giménez was then mobbed by his teammates, who were blanked for six innings before tying it in the seventh on Amed Rosario's RBI single and Ramírez's run-scoring double.

Enyel De Los Santos (3-1) kept the A's from taking the lead in the 10th and got the win.

Oakland dropped to 19-56, the club's worst record since the 1920 Philadelphia A's started with the same mark.

Ramírez began the 10th as the runner on second and the A's chose to intentionally walk the red-hot Josh Naylor to face Tyler Freeman, who dropped a bunt in front of the plate. Ramírez was safe on a close play at third before Giménez ended it.

Tony Kemp connected for his second homer — and first since April 21 — in the seventh inning off Cleveland's Aaron Civale to give the A's a 2-0 lead.

The Guardians did nearly nothing on offense for six innings — and Civale was in line for a tough loss — before Cleveland tied it in the seventh on the hits by Rosario and Ramírez.

Myles Straw doubled leading off and Oakland manager Mark Kotsay pulled Luis Medina, who came on in the second and held the Guardians to four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Sam Moll got two quick outs before Rosario's single cut Oakland's lead to 2-1.

Ramírez fell behind 1-2 before ripping a ball toward left fielder Seth Brown, who tried to snare the sinking liner with a dive. But the ball got by him and rolled to the wall, allowing the speedy Rosario to score from first.

CRAZY CATCH

Kemp also made the game's best defensive play, racing into to short right-center and snaring Will Brennan's blooper in the eighth with his back to the plate and while falling down.

TOP GUN

The Guardians brought up top pitching prospect Gavin Williams, who has dominated hitters in the minors the past two seasons. The right-hander will make his major league debut on Wednesday against the A's.

On the strength of a 100 mph fastball, Williams has blasted through Cleveland's system since being drafted in the first round in 2021.

“It's exciting,” manager Terry Francona said, “We told him, ‘Hey, just go pitch and if we have to start making adjustments, we will. But let’s see. You pitch first.’”

TRAINER'S ROOM

Athletics: RHP Drew Rucinski (knee sprain) was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list to make room for RHP Yacksel Rios, who was acquired from Atlanta on Sunday for cash.

Guardians: RHP Cal Quantrill (shoulder sprain), who has recently been in Arizona during his recovery, is scheduled to make a 60-pitch rehab start in Columbus on Friday before the team decides whether to activate him.

UP NEXT

Williams is expecting more than 50 relatives and guests to be at his debut. “You’re going to definitely hear them,” said Williams, who will face Athletics right-hander Paul Blackburn (0-0, 3.48 ERA).

CLEVELAND (WJW) - Cleveland Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie will be out for several weeks for an elbow injury, the team confirmed.

According to the Guardians, doctors at the Cleveland Clinic checked McKenzie Tuesday morning, determining the right-handed pitcher sprained the ulnar collateral ligament of his elbow.

The team said McKenzie is expected to get a second opinion, but he won't throw for the Guardians for several weeks.

McKenzie was placed on the injured player list on Saturday. He had already missed the first two months of the season with a shoulder sprain.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Gavin Williams, Cleveland's top pitching prospect, will make his major league debut on Wednesday with a start against the Oakland Athletics.

A first-round draft pick in 2021, the 23-year-old Williams has risen quickly through the Guardians organization, and the club feels it's time to see how his electric fastball plays against the game's best players.

The Guardians, who are two games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central, announced Williams' start before opening a three-game series against the A's.

Williams has gone 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA this season at Double-A Akron (three starts) and Triple-A Columbus (nine starts). He has struck out 81 in 60 innings. Last season, Williams struck out 149 in 115 innings.

With starters Triston McKenzie (elbow) and Cal Quantrill (shoulder) on the injured list, the Guardians have an opportunity to get a look at Williams, who pitched in college at East Carolina.

Injuries have forced manager Terry Francona to plug holes in his starting staff and use rookies Tanner Bibee and Logan Allen more than expected.

Guardians have fun playing baseball, beating Diamondbacks 12-3 https://fox8.com/sports/guardians-have-fun-playing-baseball-beating-diamondbacks-12-3/ Mon, 19 Jun 2023 00:05:41 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2180935 **Related Video Above: Guardians star visits school for art lesson.**

PHOENIX (AP) — Josh Naylor had four hits and three RBIs, and the Cleveland Guardians avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-3 on Sunday.

The Guardians cruised through the series finale, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second and six more in the fourth for an 11-1 lead. Right-hander Tanner Bibee (3-2) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings, striking out six and walking three.

Cleveland pounded out 16 hits. It accomplished much of its damage off D-backs starter Zach Davies, who has struggled since his return from the injured list in late May.

Cleveland scored two in the first after leadoff batter Steven Kwan reached on an error by shortstop Nick Ahmed. José Ramírez drove Kwan home with a triple and Josh Naylor's double scored Ramírez.

Kwan was in the middle of the action again in the second with a two-run triple that scored Will Brennan and Myles Straw. Amed Rosario's sacrifice fly pushed the Guardians' advantage to 5-0.

Kwan scored four times and drove in three runs. Straw, Brennan, Rosario and Tyler Freeman all had two hits.

Arizona's Christian Walker hit a solo homer — his second long ball in two days — to cut the margin to 5-1. But the Guardians responded with six more runs in the fourth, punctuated by a two-run triple from Andrés Giménez.

Davies (1-3) gave up nine runs, including eight earned, over 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered nine hits, walked one and struck out two. The right-hander has a 7.11 ERA over seven starts this season.

LIGHTS OUT

The D-backs say a downtown power surge in Phoenix led to a 15-minute delay in the first inning after some of the lights went out at Chase Field.

The game was played in the afternoon, but temperatures in the 100s in central Arizona meant the 25-year-old stadium’s retractable roof was closed.

“Our facility staff reacted quickly to power backup systems and reset all functions," the D-backs said in a statement. “After a 15-minute delay, systems were restored to adequate levels for play to continue.”

UP NEXT

Guardians: Have an off day Monday before traveling to Oakland for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The Guardians will use RHP Aaron Civale (2-2, 2.67 ERA) in the first game. The Athletics will use RHP Luis Medina (1-6, 7.55 ERA).

Guardians fall to Diamondbacks after big 8th inning for AZ https://fox8.com/sports/diamondbacks-beat-guardians-in-the-8th/ Sun, 18 Jun 2023 12:43:01 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2180494 PHOENIX (AP) — Jake McCarthy knows his value to the Arizona Diamondbacks lies in a few areas, particularly his elite speed that can cause havoc when he gets on base.

The outfielder didn't really need to show off those wheels on Saturday night. He did anyway.

McCarthy led off the eighth with a go-ahead homer, rookie Corbin Carroll added a two-run shot three batters later and the Diamondbacks launched three long balls in the inning to beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-3.

McCarthy's second homer of the season gave Arizona a 3-2 lead and the 25-year-old sprinted around the bases in celebration, looking as though he was trying to leg out an inside-the-park homer rather than one that cleared the fence.

“Yeah, I was excited,” McCarthy said, grinning. “We'll have to see the time on that. Maybe I'll start going for the fastest one of the season or something."

The surprising NL West leaders have taken the first two games of the series and will go for a sweep on Sunday.

McCarthy connected off starter Shane Bieber, who also gave up the no-doubter by Carroll. It was a frustrating end to the night for the Cleveland ace, who was excellent until his final few batters.

“Feeling really good, really strong,” Bieber said. “But five runs on three homers is not generally going to work. Tough one tonight, tough one to swallow. Hopefully, we bounce back tomorrow.”

Bieber (5-4) allowed five runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out five.

“When you're going against a pitcher of Bieber's ability and quality, you're just trying to grind out the day," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “He had good stuff, but we hung in there.”

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. capped the eighth with a solo homer off reliever Nick Sandlin. Arizona scored all its runs on four homers.

The Guardians jumped ahead 1-0 in the first when Andrés Giménez coaxed a bases-loaded walk. Giménez extended Cleveland's advantage to 2-0 in the third with a long homer down the right-field line.

Christian Walker tied it in the fourth with a two-run homer that just cleared the right-field wall. It was his 14th of the season.

Diamondbacks left-hander Tommy Henry gave up two runs and seven hits over six innings, bouncing back after two rocky starts. He walked two and struck out three.

Scott McGough got two outs for his third save. He entered with two on and gave up José Ramírez's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded before retiring Josh Naylor on a game-ending grounder.

Steven Kwan and Amed Rosario, the top two batters in Cleveland's lineup, both had four hits.

MCCARTHY'S BREAKOUT

McCarthy was considered part of the D-backs' young nucleus before the season, but got sent to Triple-A after a rough April.

He returned to the big leagues in late May and has been much better, hitting .318 with three doubles, two triples, a homer and 12 stolen bases since May 26.

WALKER'S WEB GEMS

Walker earned his first Gold Glove last season and the first baseman made a pair of excellent defensive plays on Saturday.

He snared a hard grounder from Ramírez for the third out of the fourth inning to save at least one run. Then in the seventh, Walker started a 3-6-3 double play, cleanly fielding the ball and throwing to second before getting back to first for the return throw.

“When you have a defense like this, you can trust it,” Henry said. “It makes it easier to settle into an outing, because you can get back over the white of the plate, trust that the elite outfielders and infielders are going to make the plays needed.”

TRAINER'S ROOM

Guardians RHP Triston McKenzie was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain.

ROSTER MOVES

Cleveland called up catching prospect Bo Naylor from the minors. Guardians manager Terry Francona said the 23-year-old will start on Sunday. LHPs Daniel Norris and Tim Herrin were also promoted from Triple-A. RHP Touki Toussaint was designated for assignment.

UP NEXT

The Diamondbacks send RHP Zach Davies (1-2, 5.46 ERA) to the mound Sunday against rookie RHP Tanner Bibee (2-2, 3.91).

Guardians moves: Top prospect Bo Naylor promoted, Triston McKenzie on IL https://fox8.com/sports/guardians-moves-top-prospect-bo-naylor-promoted-triston-mckenzie-on-il/ Sun, 18 Jun 2023 01:30:52 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2179917 **Cleveland Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie speaks on Race for Kids benefitting Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio last summer in related video above.**

PHOENIX (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians called up catching prospect Bo Naylor and put right-handed pitcher Triston McKenzie on the 15-day injured list on Saturday.

The roster moves come one day after the Guardians designated veteran catcher Mike Zunino for assignment.

The 23-year-old Naylor was hitting .254 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs at Triple-A Columbus. The Canadian was selected with the 29th overall pick of the 2018 draft. He’ll join his older brother Josh Naylor, who also plays for the Guardians.

McKenzie’s elbow issue is the latest injury setback for the right-hander, who missed the first two months with a shoulder strain. The Guardians have high hopes for the hard-throwing McKenzie, who went 11-11 with a 2.96 ERA in 30 starts last season.

McKenzie was brilliant in his season debut on June 4, striking out 10 over five scoreless innings. He struggled in his second outing against the Astros last week and was scratched from his planned start against the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Bo Naylor has made two cameos with the Guardians over the past two seasons and has 10 big-league at-bats. This time, manager Terry Francona said he hopes the young slugger is here to stay.

“Nobody has a crystal ball, but that's the idea,” Francona said.

Francona said he doesn't know how he'll split the catching duties between Naylor and Cam Gallagher, other than that Naylor will start Sunday's game. The veteran manager added that bringing up a catcher from the minors is sometimes more difficult because of all of the position's responsibilities, particularly handling the pitching staff.

“The game for young catchers can be going so fast,” Francona said. “So we'll try to simplify for him.”

Zunino was hitting .177 with three home runs, 11 RBIs and 61 strikeouts. The veteran signed a one-year, $6 million deal during the offseason.

Richie Palacios traded from Guardians for $100,000 https://fox8.com/sports/richie-palacios-traded-from-guardians-for-100000/ Fri, 16 Jun 2023 23:38:49 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2179119 **Related Video Above: Guardians star visits school for art lesson.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians traded utilityman Richie Palacios to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday for $100,000.

Palacios, who played in 54 games for the defending AL Central champions last season, had been designated for assignment Sunday when the club activated right-hander Cody Morris from the 60-day injured list.

Palacios had spent all this season at Triple-A Columbus, where he batted .217 with three homers, 13 doubles and 30 RBIs in 56 games.

The 26-year-old Palacios was selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2018 amateur draft. At one time, he was once considered one of the club's top prospects, but the Guardians have a surplus of young outfielders and middle infielders.

Palacios will be assigned to the Memphis Redbirds, the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate.

Guardians stop the sweep against Padres https://fox8.com/sports/guardians-stop-the-sweep-against-padres/ Fri, 16 Jun 2023 12:26:58 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2178129 SAN DIEGO (AP) — David Fry hit a three-run shot for his first major league homer, José Ramírez had three hits and two RBIs, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the San Diego Padres 8-6 on Thursday.

Josh Naylor had a two-run single and Fry also doubled as the Guardians rapped out 14 hits.

“Boy, he sure helped us. He made some good throws,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said of his rookie catcher. “And he helped us offensively and that was good.”

Ramírez reached base four times with a double, two singles and a walk. Amed Rosario had three hits as well.

Manny Machado launched a three-run homer in the first inning, but the Padres were unable to overcome an early 5-0 deficit. San Diego, which had won five of six, was looking for its first three-game sweep this season.

“The top of that lineup, when they are hitting it, they are hitting it out of the ballpark,” Francona said. “That is kind of deflating when we score five and they come right back.”

Both teams turned to the bullpen after the starters were chased early. Trevor Stephan (3-2) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Emmanuel Clase got four outs for his 21st save, most in the majors.

Cleveland scored five times in the first off beleaguered starter Ryan Weathers (1-5), who gave up six runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. The big blows against him were Naylor’s two-run single and Fry's homer.

“I was pretty fired up. I feel like that was a second before I realized it was a homer. I was sprinting out of there and then I got to home plate and Naylor is bear-hugging me. It was pretty cool,” Fry said. “I was just trying to get something to hit and hopefully keep the inning going and get it to the next guy."

Machado's home run to left field on a cutter from Logan Allen shaved it to 5-3 in the bottom half. Allen lasted three innings, allowing five runs, four hits and four walks.

“He was just clearly ready for it. Probably just the wrong pitch at that time. But yeah, it probably got too much of the plate,” Allen said. “Ideally you get a lead and you go out there and get zeros and I wasn’t able to do that. I didn’t really throw strikes out of the gate and I struggled to find the zone.”

After the Padres trimmed it to 6-5 in the third, Ramírez knocked in a run with an infield single in the fourth.

Trent Grisham's RBI double made it 7-6 in the fifth, but Fry scored on Andrés Giménez's single in the eighth.

“The add-on run was really big, late,” Francona said. “We kept fighting, so that was good.”

Fernando Tatis Jr. continued to show his defensive prowess with a leaping catch up against the wall in right to rob Cleveland's Josh Bell of extra bases in the fourth. In Wednesday night’s Padres win, Tatis made a diving catch and had an outfield assist.

MACHADO’S MARK

It was Machado’s 65th home run for the Padres at Petco Park. Wil Myers held the previous team record at the ballpark with 64. Adrian Gonzalez also hit 65 homers at Petco Park, 57 with the Padres.

Another loss! Padres could sweep the Guards https://fox8.com/sports/another-loss-padres-could-sweep-the-guards/ Thu, 15 Jun 2023 11:42:08 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2176098 SAN DIEGO (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched seven shutout innings and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado hit two of San Diego's four solo homers in the Padres' 5-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night.

Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz also homered for the Padres, who have won five of their last six games and have an opportunity to sweep the three-game series versus Cleveland and reach the .500 mark for the first time since May 11th.

“With the talent that these guys have, you get it in the air and it is going to go,” San Diego manager Bob Melvin said. “He (Wacha) is spoiling us, really.”

Wacha (7-2), who has a major league best 0.91 ERA since the beginning of May, gave up four singles in 6 2/3 innings. He lowered his season ERA to 2.89.

“Overall, I felt like every pitch was working well for me,” Wacha said. “It was a really fun win for sure.”

Tatis led off the first inning with his 14th homer of the season, a shot that cleared the left-field wall by a few feet for a 364-foot home run. It was his 11th career lead-off homer and came against Aaron Civale (2-2).

“This is what I am capable of,” said Tatis, who had a homer, two doubles, two stolen bases, two runs scored, a diving catch, and an outfield assist. “This team is so talented, everybody knows it, we know it. It is just a matter of coming together and performing."

Machado hit a solo home run to left-center in the third to stake the Padres to a 2-0 lead against Civale, who gave up two runs in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and allowed five hits.

In the sixth with two out and the bases empty, Tatis hit his second double of the night down the left-field line, stole third and scored on a wild pitch by Guardians pitcher Sam Hentges. Soto followed with an opposite field homer to left for a 4-0 Padres lead.

“We are getting there, little by little," Soto said of the Padres offense. “We are getting close to where we want to be.”

Cleveland had an opportunity to get back into the game in the seventh after Wacha was pulled with two outs and the bases loaded. However, San Diego reliever Steven Wilson came to strike out Myles Straw to extinguish the Guardians threat.

“That seventh inning got a little crazy on me,” Wacha said. “Big time punch-out from Wilson.”

Cruz hit his solo shot in the eighth off Cleveland reliever Xzavion Curry.

“There are guys on this team that can carry this team by themselves,” Cruz said. “Today was a great example.”

Padres reliever Tim Hill pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve the shutout.

The Padres benefited from stellar defense with both centerfielder Trent Grisham and right-fielder Tatis making outstanding diving catches on the run in the fifth inning. Tatis also threw out Amed Rosario in the ninth after Rosario singled to right but took too wide of a turn around first base.

“We are really starting to find our way a little bit across the board,” Melvin said. “The defense has been good, the pitching has been good all year. Now it is about the offense.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Padres beat the Guards: The hit that sealed the deal https://fox8.com/news/guards-fall-short-in-front-of-sold-out-crowd/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 09:20:35 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2173988 SAN DIEGO (AP) — Gary Sánchez hit a three-run home run, his sixth homer since joining the Padres on May 30, and San Diego beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-3 on Tuesday night in front of a sell-out crowd.

“He’s been, kind of, a guy that has set the tone for us,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said.

Sánchez’ first-inning drive into the first row of seats in left-center scored Juan Soto and Jake Cronenworth. It gave Sánchez’ six home runs in 12 games for the first time since June 12-25, 2021.

“It’s tougher to hit home runs here, but it doesn’t seem like it’s real tough for him right now,” Melvin said.

Fernando Tatis Jr. added a solo homer in the second inning, his 13th of the season, to put the Padres up 4-0. Tatis also scored in the first after a walk and a sacrifice fly to left field by Xander Bogaerts.

Cleveland designated hitter Josh Bell put the Guardians on the board with a solo homer in the top of the second.

Bogaerts’ fifth-inning, RBI double to deep right-center scored Manny Machado from second base, and was enough to chase Guardians starter Tanner Bibee.

Bibee (2-2) struggled to find his control early, walking the first two batters he faced, and surrendered six earned runs over four innings. He allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out three.

The Guardians added a run in the fifth inning on Steven Kwan’s RBI groundout, and another in the sixth when third baseman José Ramírez scored on Tyler Freeman’s sacrifice fly.

Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (4-2) surrendered three earned runs on seven hits over six innings. He finished with five strikeouts and a walk.

Musgrove also added a defensive highlight, ranging to his right on a soft ground ball down the third base line, and making an off-balance throw to retire Freeman and end the third inning.

“I love plays like that,” Musgrove said, “Obviously, I don’t want to put myself in danger but I feel like I’m really good those type of plays.”

Steven Wilson and Nick Martinez pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, respectively, and Josh Hader struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 16th save.

San Diego’s bullpen has the second-lowest ERA in the majors since May 1.

The Padres have won four of the last five games, and had their 23rd sellout of the season in 34 home dates.

“The boys are starting to feel good, and that’s huge for us,” Tatis said.

ROSTER MOVES

Padres’ designated hitter Nelson Cruz was activated from the 10-day injured list before the game. First basemen Alfonso Rivas was optioned to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move. Cruz had been placed on the on the injured list following a right hamstring strain.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Guardians second basemen Andres Gimenez returned Tuesday night for a pinch-hitting appearance following a left hamstring injury that occurred Sunday in Houston.

Guardians pitching dominates Astros batters Sunday afternoon; score ends 5-0 https://fox8.com/sports/guardians-pitching-dominates-astros-batters-sunday-afternoon-score-ends-5-0/ Sun, 11 Jun 2023 19:23:11 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2169952 **Related Video Above: Guardians star visits school for art lesson.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber had his most dominant start this season with nine strikeouts over seven innings and Andrés Giménez homered, leading the Cleveland Guardians over the Houston Astros 5-0 on Sunday.

Bieber (5-3) gave up just three hits, walked two and was in command from the outset. The right-hander came in with just eight strikeouts combined in his previous three starts before matching his season-high set against Detroit on May 9.

Trevor Stephan and closer Emmanuel Clase pitched an inning apiece to finish the four-hitter.

Giménez connected for a two-run homer in the second inning off Brandon Bielak (3-3) and Josh Bell added a solo shot in the fourth as the surging Guardians, who have won six of eight and 10 of 16, took a series from Houston for the first time since 2017.

Bieber had little trouble with a Houston lineup missing All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve (rest) and MLB RBIs leader Yordan Alvarez (injured).

The 28-year-old Bieber, who has been the subject of trade speculation, held the Astros without a hit until the fourth when Kyle Tucker grounded a a two-out single into right. But as has been the case so far in 2023, Bieber, whose velocity has been down, worked around trouble by not making many mistakes.

Houston only got one runner to second off Bieber, but Yainer Diaz's leadoff double in the fifth was wasted as Cleveland's ace struck out two and got a force.

Giménez connected for his first homer in nearly one month in the second, driving a 1-0 pitch from Bielak over the wall in right after Bell reached on a broken-bat blooper. The Guardians have been looking for more power from Giménez, who has just four homers after hitting 17 in 2022.

Bell made it 3-0 in the fourth with his fifth homer, a 426-foot blast into the bullpens in center field.

ALVAREZ UPDATE

Astros manager Dusty Baker had been hopeful Alvarez could be back in 10 days, but said “probably not” when asked if that timetable seemed realistic.

“That’s a big man with some big muscles to heal,” Baker cracked.

Alvarez was leading the majors with 55 RBIs when he strained his right oblique during an at-bat against Toronto on Thursday. Alvarez is batting .272 with 17 homers. He reached base in 19 straight games before getting hurt.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Guardians: Giménez was taken out in sixth inning as a precaution with left leg tightness. RHP Cal Quantrill seemed to throw without any issues in the outfield before the game as Cleveland's training and medical staff observed. Quantrill has been out since June 2 with shoulder inflammation.

UP NEXT

Guardians: Head West and open a three-game set in San Diego on Tuesday with rookie RHP Tanner Bibee (2-1, 3.05) starting against Padres RHP Joe Musgrove (3-2, 4.35).

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jose Abreu homered and drove in three runs, rookie J.P. France stayed around until the seventh inning and Houston’s bullpen finally held off a Cleveland rally, giving the Astros a 6-4 win over the Guardians on Saturday night.

Abreu hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Triston McKenzie (0-1) and added an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth as the Astros evened the series after losing in 14 innings on Friday.

Cleveland, which came back five times to win the series opener, scored one in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate before closer Ryan Pressly struck out Will Brennan for his 12th save in 14 chances.

After a four-hour marathon won 10-9 by Cleveland, the teams got nine innings completed in a respectable 2:52.

France (2-1) walked six in 6 2/3 innings, but was helped by his infield turning three double plays. He gave up three runs and seven hits.

France’s second straight solid outing — he went a season-high seven innings against the Los Angeles Angels in his previous start — allowed manager Dusty Baker to rest his relievers after using six on Friday.

Abreu connected in Houston’s thee-run first off McKenzie, who was making just his second start after missing two months with a shoulder strain. McKenzie was lifted after five innings and 92 pitches.

Down 5-1, the Guardians, who never led Friday's game until Brennan's walk-off double in the 14th, made things interesting with a pair of runs in the seventh.

José Ramírez's RBI single chased France, and Josh Naylor's run-scoring single off reliever Bryan Abreu made it 5-3 before the right-hander struck out pinch-hitter Josh Bell with runners at second and third.

Cleveland put the first two on in the ninth with a single and error, but Pressly struck out Ramírez, gave up a sacrifice fly and then whiffed Brennan.

The Astros didn't waste any time getting to McKenzie, who beat them twice last season while holding them to one run in 15 innings.

Abreu appears to be emerging from an extended power outage. Houston slugger's, who didn't hit his first homer of the season until May 28, drove a 2-2 pitch from McKenzie over the wall in left-center for his third homer.

COMEBACK STORY

The Guardians made history with their litany of late-game rallies Friday. They scored the tying or go-ahead run in the seventh, ninth, 12th, 13th and 14th innings.

According to OptaSTATS, Cleveland is the first team in the modern era to erase a deficit in five separate innings after the seventh.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Guardians: All-Star 2B Andrés Giménez was not in the starting lineup after twisting his arm during Friday's game. He came in as a pinch hitter.

Brennan's double in 14th gives Guardians 10-9 win over Astros https://fox8.com/sports/brennans-double-in-14th-gives-guardians-10-9-win-over-astros/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 14:30:25 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2168261 **Related Video Above: Guardians superfan hits slight bump on road to attend all 162 games -- how to help.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — Will Brennan doubled home Tyler Freeman immediately after Freeman’s RBI double in the 14th inning, and the Cleveland Guardians outlasted the Houston Astros 10-9 on Friday night.

The Guardians fell behind 4-0 in the second inning and 5-1 in the fifth, never leading until Brennan’s game-ending hit. Cleveland tied it at 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8, but Houston pushed back ahead by one run each time.

“Whatever the challenge that was brought up, we were ready and we capitalized on every moment we could,” Freeman said. “We just tried keeping the line going. That was the biggest thing. And we came out on top at the end.”

The Astros made it 9-8 in the 14th when Kyle Tucker singled in automatic runner Jose Altuve for the second time in three innings. Josh Naylor also scored twice in extras after starting the frame on second base, including the tying run in the 14th.

“We’ve certainly been on the other side of it, but boy, there was so much that happened,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “When you’re at home and they score, it’s not like, ‘OK, the game is over,’ because you’ve also got a guy at second.”

Xzavion Curry (3-0) pitched one inning for the Guardians, who played their major league-high 30th one-run game, while Seth Martinez (1-2) worked the final 3 1/3 innings for the Astros.

The 4-hour, 3-minute game was the longest of the season for both teams, both in time and innings.

“That was like a 15-round fight, but we only went 14,” Houston manager Dusty Baker said. “We would score, then they would score. My guys battled hard, they battled hard. That’s a tough one to lose.”

Steven Kwan singled home David Fry in the 13th for Cleveland after Mauricio Dubón’s run-scoring double gave the Astros an 8-7 lead in the top half. Kwan also saved two runs with a diving grab of Altuve’s low liner to left with two outs.

Each team also scored in the 12th with Houston going up 7-6 on Tucker’s RBI single that plated Altuve, and Cleveland extending the game when Naylor scored on a throwing error by shortstop Jeremy Peña.

“I trusted my gut, but it didn’t work out,” said Peña, who attempted to complete an inning-ending double play at first with Brennan. “It was a battle on both sides, back and forth.”

Rookie Yainer Diaz gave Houston a 6-5 lead in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, but Naylor’s two-out, two-strike double off the left-field wall in the ninth off Astros closer Ryan Pressly scored José Ramírez.

Cleveland trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, when it scored three times against Cristian Javier. Ramírez’s solo homer in the seventh knotted it at 5-all, giving him four home runs in a two-game span.

Javier, who had won five straight starts, tied his season high with four runs allowed over five innings. The right-hander struck out two, his fewest since 2021.

“We all tried to stay positive and give our guys energy and good vibes in the dugout,” Javier said.

Peña had his second career four-hit game and José Abreu belted a three-run homer in the first off Logan Allen. It was Abreu’s second blast since May 28, when he ended a 51-game homerless drought to begin his first season with Houston.

Ramírez went 3 for 4 with two runs and three walks, one night after he hit three homers against Boston. He is the first Cleveland player with four homers and five extra-base hits over two games since Travis Hafner in 2004.

Before the game, Houston’s Yordan Alvarez, who leads the majors with 55 RBIs, was placed on the 10-day IL with right oblique discomfort. The 25-year-old outfielder was hurt Thursday and returned to Houston for additional evaluation.

READY AND WILLING

Astros 2B Mauricio Dubón filled in for Alvarez in left field. Dubón is in his fifth year in the majors, but has only made seven starts in left — all since being acquired by Houston on May 14, 2022.

“I’m a good athlete, so I know I’ll be good out there,” he said. “I just like being in the lineup.”

Rookie C César Salazar was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Astros: 2B Dixon Machado (right meniscus) had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee and will be sidelined for at least six weeks. The 31-year-old attended spring training with Houston before being optioned to Sugar Land.

Guardians: RHP Cody Morris (right shoulder strain), who has been on the IL all season, will make two more rehab appearances for Triple-A Columbus before being activated. Francona said Morris will be used as a reliever in Cleveland.

UP NEXT

Astros RHP J.P. France (1-1, 3.44 ERA) takes on Guardians RHP Triston McKenzie (0-0, 0.00) in the second game of the three-game set. McKenzie struck out 10 over five scoreless innings in his season debut June 4 at Minnesota.

Ramírez hits 3 homers to power Guardians to 10-3 win https://fox8.com/sports/ramirez-hits-3-homers-to-power-guardians-to-10-3-win/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 02:09:17 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2166297 **Related Video Above: Guardians superfan hits slight bump on road to attend all 162 games -- how to help.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez homered in his first three at-bats — and from both sides of the plate — to power the Cleveland Guardians to a 10-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

Ramírez connected for a solo shot in the first inning off Matt Dermody (0-1), belted a two-run shot — his 200th career homer — in the third and added another solo blast in the sixth when the Guardians hit for the cycle, had eight straight hits and scored five times.

Ramírez came up a second time in the sixth bidding for a rare four-homer game, but struck out swinging. The four-time All-Star third baseman had another chance in the eighth, but grounded to third.

There have only been 16 four-homer games in the majors since 1901. The last to do it was Arizona's J.D. Martinez in 2017. Cleveland got one from Rocky Colavito on June 10, 1959.

Ramírez also showed off some of his defensive prowess in the sixth by backhanding Justin Turner's hard shot and throwing off balance across the diamond to get Boston's third baseman while backpedaling in foul territory.

Will Brennan added a homer as the Guardians won the series and handed the Red Sox their fifth loss in six games.

Aaron Civale (2-1) had his second solid outing for Cleveland after spending 46 games on the injured list with an oblique strain.

The right-hander pitched five scoreless innings last week at Minnesota, and kept the Red Sox off the scoreboard until the fifth, when Reese McGuire hit a two-out RBI double.

Triston Casas chased Civale in the sixth with his seventh homer to pull Boston within 3-2.

But Cleveland, whose offense has awakened after a slow start, pounded former teammate Corey Kluber in the sixth. After Ramírez homered, Andrés Giménez hit a two-run double, Myles Straw hit an RBI triple and Brennan singled home a run as the Guardians opened an 8-2 lead.

Kluber, who was recently demoted to the bullpen, was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Dermody's first major league start came with some controversy.

The left-hander posted a homophobic tweet in 2021, and since deleted it, that the Red Sox were not aware of when they signed Dermody in January. He participated in the team's mandatory anti-discrimination and harassment prevention training in March.

The team called Dermodys' post “hurtful” and manager Alex Cora praised the club's handling of the matter.

HAVE A SEAT

Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo was not in the starting lineup after being benched for not hustling in Wednesday's loss.

With Boston trailing 5-2 in the seventh inning, Verdugo slowed up between first and second base on a ball hit by Masataka Yoshida. Cora felt like Verdugo should have been running harder and immediately pulled him.

Before the series finale, Cora explained Verdugo was being disciplined.

“We just felt like on that play his reaction wasn’t a great one, not hustling his behind to second,” Cora said. "I don’t know if he was out or safe, but I didn’t like it. ... I felt like it wasn't acceptable, and he knows it.”

Cora said he spoke to Verdugo, who has been having a solid season. He'll play tomorrow in New York.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Red Sox: INF Yu Chang (left hamate fracture) will continue his rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester this weekend and rejoin Boston's roster on Monday. ... LHP Richard Bleier (shoulder inflammation) is not recovering as quickly as the team expected. He recently began playing catch for the first time since going on the IL on May 22.

NEXT UP

Red Sox: RHP Garrett Whitlock (2-2, 5.16 ERA) starts the series opener in New York against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (7-0, 2.82).

Guardians: Rookie LHP Logan Allen (3-2, 2.76), who tossed seven scoreless innings in his last start, goes against Houston RHP Christian Javier (7-1, 2.84) in the opener of a three-game set.

Guardians impacted, flight delays due to smoke https://fox8.com/news/guardians-impacted-flight-delays-due-to-smoke/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 19:00:43 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2165664 CLEVELAND (WJW) - The smoke from the hundreds of wildfires in Canada is impacting travel and pregame activities before the Cleveland Guardians game Thursday night.

According to the Guardians, “All player pregame activities will be held inside and arrival has been pushed back.”

The decision came from a combination of factors, including the air quality issues tied to the fires.

“We’ve been trying to pick a day to get our guys off their feet this week with all the night games and the current conditions factored into the decision,” said Bart Swain, Director of Baseball Information and Player Relations.

Northeast Ohio has been under an air quality advisory due to the fires and blanket of hazy smoke moving in from Canada.

Doctors have been recommending the young, elderly and anyone with respiratory issues like asthma and COPD stay inside and/or limit outdoor activities right now.

The smoke has become an issue for parts of the Midwest and almost all of the Northeast.  New York has been experiencing significant smoke and smog that led to many airport delays and cancellations.

On Wednesday the FAA issued a temporary ground stop to LaGuardia due to the low visibility issues.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport was still also seeing some flights impacted.

Flights into Newark, Laguardia and Toronto were delayed.

“If an airport needs to go into ground stop or ground delay it can impact other departure locations so we are monitoring like we would monitor a normal weather event,” said Dejan Radosavljevic, Assistant Commissioner of Airport Operations

Radosavljevic suggests travelers check with the airport’s website and their airline frequently over the next couple of days before heading to the airport.

“Could cancellations occur, we're not sure, it really depends on what the winds are going to do with the smoke and where the low visibility will occur,” he said, “We just encourage people to pay attention to their flight, so they’re not stuck at the airport.”

Leah Jackson was at the airport with a group of tenth and eleventh graders from Hathaway Brown in Shaker Heights heading to Zambia for a two-week exchange program when their first leg to Newark was delayed due to the smoke.

“It’s certainly concerning just trying to coordinate a trip with this many people this many different factors in play is probably making our nerves a little uneasy but you know we’re just gonna hope everything works out,” said Jackson.

Rosario, Naylor each have 3 hits and RBI, Guardians beat Red Sox https://fox8.com/sports/rosario-naylor-each-have-3-hits-and-rbi-guardians-beat-red-sox/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 02:51:38 +0000 https://fox8.com/?p=2164481 **Related Video Above: Guardians superfan hits slight bump on road to attend all 162 games -- how to help.**

CLEVELAND (AP) — Amed Rosario and Josh Naylor each had three hits and an RBI, Josh Bell drove in a run for the sixth consecutive game and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Rosario singled twice against Kutter Crawford (1-3), then had an RBI double off Justin Garza as the Guardians scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to erase a 2-1 deficit.

Bell drove in a pair to give him eight RBIs during the streak that began May 28. Naylor had two singles and a double for Cleveland, which has split the first two games of the series.

Rookie Tanner Bibee (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing one earned, for his first victory at Progressive Field. The right-hander struck out two and gave up four hits in his eighth start since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus.

Emmanuel Clase worked a hitless ninth for his MLB-best 20th save.

Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas, second baseman Enmanuel Valdéz and third baseman Rafael Devers committed errors in the fourth, leading to a pair of unearned runs that gave Cleveland a 3-2 lead.

Devers mishandled Bell’s grounder off Brennan Bernardino, sending José Ramírez home with the go-ahead run. Ramírez had reached when Casas and Valdéz committed miscues before he touched first base.

Boston tied a season high with three errors, upping its AL-leading total to 43. It has lost four of five and is 10-17 since May 7.

Reliever Crawford made his second start in five days for Boston, pitching three innings with three strikeouts. The right-hander was charged with three runs, one earned.

Devers singled home Alex Verdugo in the first for the Red Sox, but Cleveland tied it in the second on Bell’s RBI single. Devers was the only Boston player with two hits.

Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy made his big-league debut, working 3 1/3 scoreless innings to finish.

IMPACT PLAYER

Boston's Masataka Yoshida is the only rookie among the top 10 in the majors in both batting average and on-base percentage. The 29-year-old Japanese outfielder signed a five-year, $90 million contract after spending seven seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball.

“So far, he’s been great and we love him in the dugout,” manager Alex Cora said. “I’m glad he’s been comfortable enough to communicate more. Last night, he pointed out something to Jarren (Duran) that he saw while he was hitting.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Red Sox: SS Yu Chang (left hamate fracture) is 2 for 7 with a stolen base through two games of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester. Cora said Chang will remain with the WooSox until at least the end of the weekend.

Guardians: RHP Cody Morris (right shoulder strain) allowed one run in three innings of a rehab start for Triple-A Columbus against Louisville on Tuesday. Morris has a 1.04 ERA over 8 1/3 innings with the Clippers and Double-A Akron.

UP NEXT

Guardians RHP Aaron Civale (1-1, 2.04 ERA) makes his second start since missing two months with a left oblique strain. The Red Sox have not announced a starter, but Cora said it likely will be a pitcher who is not on their 40-man roster.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rob Refsnyder had the go-ahead RBI single in a four-run eighth inning and James Paxton tied his season high with nine strikeouts, giving the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night.

Kiké Hernández drove in two runs and Masataka Yoshida had three hits for the Red Sox, who put their first six batters on base in the eighth against relievers Enyel De Los Santos (2-1) and Nick Sandlin.

Paxton (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings, matching his longest outing since Sept. 3, 2019, with the Yankees. The left-hander gave up both Guardians runs in the first, then scattered three hits over the next six frames.

Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 16 opportunities. Boston snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 10-16 since May 7.

Cleveland carried a 2-1 lead into the eighth before De Los Santos loaded the bases and walked Hernández to plate Justin Turner with the tying run. Refsnyder and Pablo Reyes followed with RBI singles and Alex Verdugo added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

The Guardians pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs off Chris Martin. Amed Rosario singled in Josh Naylor and Will Brennan doubled for his third hit, scoring Tyler Freeman, before Myles Straw struck out to end the eighth.

Naylor singled, doubled and scored twice, and Josh Bell had two hits in his return from the paternity list. Defending AL Central champion Cleveland has lost 27 of its last 45 games after beginning the season 9-6.

Yoshida went 3 for 5 with a run. The 29-year-old leads AL rookies with 66 hits and ranks third with a .320 batting average.

Cleveland went up 2-0 in the first when Naylor and Bell smacked back-to-back doubles to right. Steven Kwan scored on the first and Naylor came home on the second.

Hernández singled in Yoshida in the sixth, cutting Boston’s deficit to 2-1 and chasing Guardians starter Shane Bieber. The right-hander tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and matching his season-low with two strikeouts.

Cleveland pitching coach Carl Willis was not with the team for personal reasons. Assistant Joe Torres filled in.

Red Sox LHP Chris Murphy, one of the top prospects in the organization, was recalled from Triple-A Worcester and could start Thursday. Murphy went 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 10 games, nine of them starts, with 42 strikeouts and 25 walks over 39 2/3 innings.

“There have been a lot of downs, some ups this season,” the 25-year-old said. “I’m ready to go and work wherever they need me.”

Manager Alex Cora said Murphy is available out of the bullpen, but will be a candidate to fill the vacant spot in the rotation if he isn’t used in the first two games in Cleveland.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Red Sox: CF Adam Duvall (left wrist fracture), who is batting .188 through five games of a rehab assignment with Worcester, is set to be activated Friday. Cora said Duvall will “most likely” join the team in New York for its series against the Yankees.

Guardians: SS Amed Rosario (left knee soreness) was not in the lineup for the third straight game, but manager Terry Francona said he will likely start Wednesday. Rosario had been hitless in 15 consecutive at-bats prior to his RBI single in the eighth.

UP NEXT

Red Sox RHP Kutter Crawford (1-2, 3.48 ERA), who has made eight of his 11 appearances in relief, takes on Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee (1-1, 3.20 ERA). Crawford started and pitched three innings Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay.
